The situation

A multi-storey office building's brick-and-glass-panel facade needed a fabrication-ready 3D model of one elevation — the cladding panel layout and joint lines had to match the real, as-built facade geometry rather than an idealized drawing.

The approach

The facade was captured and modeled with panel and joint lines drawn directly from the point cloud, not estimated from the reference photo — so panel dimensions and joint positions reflect what's actually built, including any real-world irregularity a purely drawn model would miss.

The outcome

The fabrication team received a model of the actual facade geometry, not a nominal one — reducing the risk of a panel that doesn't fit once it reaches the wall.

Questions about this project

Why did the panel and joint lines need to come from the point cloud instead of the reference photo?
A photo can't capture true dimensions or out-of-plane irregularity; drawing directly from the point cloud is what let the fabrication team work from the facade's actual as-built geometry instead of an estimate.
