Our process

Where Scan to CAD adds one more step

    Control network

    Leica Total Station establishes the geo-referenced control points the drawing will be dimensioned against.

  2. 2

    FARO capture

    The site is captured as a registered point cloud — control-tied, not cloud-to-cloud alone.

  3. 3

    Registration

    Every scan is registered to the control network, not to whichever scan sits next to it — that's what the CAD drawing's accuracy actually depends on.

  4. 4

    Drafting & QA

    Linework is drawn directly from the point cloud and checked against it line by line — the step that determines whether the drawing matches reality or just looks plausible.

Can you work from an existing, older drawing set instead of a fresh scan?

  • We can use an old drawing set as a starting reference, but the deliverable itself is always drawn from a fresh scan — old drawings are rarely accurate enough to trust on their own.
  • If a fresh scan isn't possible for part of the site, we'll say so explicitly rather than quietly filling the gap from the old drawings.
  • Tell us what drawings already exist before the site visit — it helps us scope the work, even if it isn't the primary source.

Scan to CAD — frequently asked

What's the difference between your 3 CAD levels, and which one do I need?
Level 1 is line-based only, for area/quantity takeoff. Level 2 adds dimensions and hatching, suited to renovation documentation. Level 3 is fully aligned and superimposed — the most complete deliverable. See "Which CAD level do I actually need?" above for a quick guide.
What formats do you deliver CAD in?
DWG and DXF, at all three levels.
How long does a typical Scan to CAD project take?
From roughly 3–5 days for a Level 1 linework survey to 2–3 weeks for a full Level 3 aligned/superimposed set — see the tier table above for specifics.
Can you work from an existing (older/inaccurate) drawing set, or only from a fresh scan?
The deliverable is always drawn from a fresh scan; an old drawing set can be used as a starting reference but isn't the source of truth.
What accuracy/tolerance can I expect?
Point cloud ranging error is ±1 mm; deliverable tolerance tightens from roughly ±15 mm at Level 1 to ±5 mm at Level 3 — see the accuracy table above.
Do you provide area/quantity takeoffs directly, or just the drawing?
A Level 1 Linework Survey is specifically built to support direct area and quantity takeoff — ask for the takeoff figures alongside the drawing file.
Can you handle a facade-only or heritage-building survey?
Yes — see the Facade Survey and Heritage Survey pages linked above for how those specific applications work.
What do you need from us before starting (access, existing drawings, etc.)?
Site access details and any existing drawings you have (even if outdated) — the drawings help us scope, even though the deliverable is drawn fresh from the scan.
Can the CAD file be upgraded to a full BIM model later if we need it?
Yes — because the underlying point cloud doesn't change, we can process the same capture into a Scan to BIM model later without a second site visit.
How is pricing structured for CAD deliverables?
Primarily by level (1, 2, or 3) and site size/complexity — ask for a quote once you know roughly which level fits your use case.
